Leak Detection & Repair

Even a small leak can waste a significant amount of water and increase your water bill. If you notice an unexpected increase in water usage, check for leaks as soon as possible.

Running Toilets

A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water each day, resulting in a much higher water bill. This is one of the most common household leaks and should be repaired promptly.

To troubleshoot a running toilet:

• Inspect the toilet flapper, as a worn or damaged flapper is the most common cause.

• Check and adjust the water level in the tank if necessary.

• If the toilet continues to run, the fill valve may need to be replaced.

Checking for Irrigation Leaks

Irrigation systems are another common source of water loss. Look for these warning signs:

• Taller, greener grass or moss around sprinkler heads may indicate a leaking or damaged valve. Clean or replace worn parts as needed.

• Wet spots, muddy areas, or eroding soil may signal a broken underground pipe.

• Dry patches in your lawn may indicate a clogged or damaged sprinkler head.

• Water spraying onto sidewalks, driveways, or streets may indicate a misaligned or damaged sprinkler. Watch your system while it is running to identify the problem.

• Sprinklers that spray like geysers usually have broken heads and should be replaced immediately.

Property Owner Responsibility

The property owner is responsible for maintaining and repairing the water service line from the meter to the home, including pressure pumps, private water tanks, irrigation systems, and all plumbing located on the customer's property.
